Beyond the Kitchen at Nelly’s Farm

When people think of Nelly’s Farm, they picture fresh sausage rolls, Scotch eggs and homemade favourites. While we’re incredibly proud of what comes out of the kitchen, there’s another side to the farm. A passion project that keeps us just as busy every single day.

Unlike when we first began, life on the farm now starts long before the ovens are switched on, and we wouldn’t change it for the world.

Our animals have found a place in our hearts, and caring for them has become one of the most rewarding parts of our daily routine. This summer we’ve welcomed three Saddleback pigs, eight playful goats, nine sheep, nine hens and one very confident cockerel. Every day brings something different, from feeding and checking the animals to making sure they’re healthy, content and well looked after.

The truth is, we don’t do it for any reason other than the enjoyment it brings. Take our hens, for example. They reward us with around ten fresh eggs each day, nowhere near enough to keep up with demand, but that’s never been the point. Whether they’re scratching around the yard or making themselves heard whenever someone arrives, they never fail to make us smile, no matter how busy the day becomes.

Summer has also been a fantastic season in our on-site allotment. We’ve been growing cucumbers, gherkins, pumpkins and plenty of other crops from the same family, all of which have been thriving. It’s a reminder that good food always begins with patience, care and a little help from nature.

One of the real highlights has been welcoming Josh’s children, Margot and Lenny, onto the farm during the summer holidays to help harvest our crops. Watching them get involved has been incredibly rewarding. The farm isn’t just somewhere we work. It’s somewhere we can spend time together, make memories and pass on a genuine appreciation for the countryside.

Life on the farm is all about balance. Every season brings new challenges, new jobs and something different to look forward to. There is always a crop to tend, an animal to check on and, most importantly, a reason to smile.
