Autumn on the Farm: Field & Fork | Nelly’s Farm

by Joshua Reeves

Autumn brings a change of pace at Nelly’s Farm.

The mornings get darker, the evenings draw in, the farm starts to look a little different and the summer rush slows down somewhat. But while summer might officially be behind us, there is still plenty happening in the kitchen and on the surrounding farm.

For us, more recently especially, the farm and the fork have always gone hand in hand.

In autumn, the kitchen comes to life as people look to stay home and enjoy comforting, home-cooked food. Sausage rolls, Scotch eggs and pasties are always a safe bet for a wet, windy evening, and demand for those classic flavours always seems to surge.

We love it when our favourites are in demand, but when we get a moment to slow down, you’ll always find us out on the farm.

Our animals continue to keep us busy as the seasons change. The pigs, goats, sheep, hens and very confident cockerel all need plenty of care, whatever the weather. And trust us when we say they get very vocal when their every need isn’t tended to!

Then there’s our allotment, with a wealth of seedlings sprouting even in the colder months, and others coming into bloom. We’re particularly excited about our spooky pumpkins. There are plenty of jobs to keep us occupied as we head further into autumn, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

This connection between the farm and the kitchen is something we are particularly proud of. This year, we’ve made a conscious effort to make the most of the South Downs. Growing some of our own produce and looking after an array of animals gives us a much closer relationship with our surroundings.

It also means every day is a school day. There is always something new to learn, whether that’s discovering what grows best, finding a new use for a crop or simply working with the seasons rather than against them.

So, while you might know us for what comes out of the kitchen, there’s a whole lot more going on at Nelly’s Farm. And, as we head into autumn, we’ll be keeping busy in both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on the farm during autumn?

Autumn is a busy time at Nelly’s Farm, with animals to care for, crops to harvest and the farm to prepare for the colder months ahead.

Does Nelly’s Farm grow its own produce?

We grow a range of seasonal crops on the farm, including cucumbers, gherkins and pumpkins during the summer, alongside other produce throughout the year.

How does the farm connect with the kitchen?

The farm and kitchen are closely connected. Looking after the land, animals and crops gives us a better understanding of where our food comes from. While we don’t currently use much of our own produce in the kitchen, growing and caring for it still helps shape what we produce and gives us a much closer connection to the food we make.
