The Heatwave is Here & People are Looking to Picnic
by Joshua Reeves
We are welcoming July with open arms.
The heatwave, although perhaps a degree or two too hot, is a welcome change from the bleary mornings we came to know and resent, and now getting out of bed doesn't seem quite so hard.
Now, like everyone, we enjoy our days off. Whether it's a day trekking over the South Downs, relaxing at the beach or taking the kids to the park, one thing is for sure, a picnic is perfect.
We're not talking about a packed lunch with a bottle of water, we're talking going whole hog and, as such, we've compiled our top tips to make the most of the summer sun and enjoy a fresh, delicious picnic.
1. Finding the spot and taking a blanket
You know what it's like, you trawl for what seems like hours only to find what looks like the perfect spot, only to find ants in their thousands, disaster! To counter this, do some scouting, find a nice, flat area with a little shade that's not hours and hours away from your start point.
The blanket is equally as important, use this to prevent any wet bottoms from morning dew and also to just be another, cleaner layer between you and the earth.
2. Don't forget the icepacks
There is nothing, and we mean nothing, worse than sitting down to enjoy some food and finding the sandwiches warm and sticky, drinks tepid and chocolate melted.
Ensure you pack properly and use a freezer pack filled with carefully placed ice packs to keep food and drink fresh and cool.
3. Good company
There's no use preparing everything only to meet up with people you'll find yourself getting bored of, sick of, or worse - both!
Ensure you carefully select people like-minded, if you fancy a chilled picnic with a book, plan your party accordingly. Similarly, if it's early evening with a bottle of wine and a speaker, don't take the dullards!
4. Most Importantly, GREAT FOOD
Now, this is where we come into our element. Good food that can be, but doesn't have to be, shared. We're talking scotch eggs, sausage rolls, quiche, pork pies, funnily enough, our specialities!
Not to blow our own trumpet, but we've never been to a picnic that's been made worse by our food, and trust us, we've been to some stinkers, but the food more than makes up for it!
