Filling your mind and your stomach

Kids running riot
The weather not cooperating
Making memories with your family?...
August is officially here, for kids around the country a time to rest and recharge, for parents around the country a time to clean the house and pull out a few hairs.
But, despite the break from education we believe that you should never stop learning and, for that reason, we’ve answered some of your, and the internets, most common questions around the humble sausage roll.
1) Can sausage roll meat be pink
The simple answer here is yes! Typically the higher quality of sausage the darker they turn on the inside which is why if you pick up a sausage roll from a cheap supplier, despite being warm, they are still pink on the side.
This isn’t a slight on those sausage rolls however, for some people they’re just looking for a simple snack throughout the day, for us at Nelly’s though, we always use high quality, local sausages, so no pink meat here!
2) Can a sausage roll be fried
Of course they can! For some people this is exactly how they like them, lightly fried until golden brown - make sure to pre cook the sausages though!
For us however, we like the pastry to be rich and flaky, so for that reason we oven bake ours to perfection, giving that crunch when warm - and a little mess when chilled!
3) What pastry is used to make a sausage roll?
In our opinion, there is no debate on this one, the ONLY answer is, fresh, crispy, buttery puff pastry.
Some people, food heathens, use a shortcrust pastry. Baked at a lower temperature, shortcrust pastry is typically thicker than puff and is more crumbly as opposed to the flaky nature of puff. The honest answer though, is that either can be used, but it's important to know their differences.
4) Sausage Roll serving suggestions
Now, with the sausage roll being the star of the show, it’s important that the supporting acts are as good as the main event. For us, we have four core flavours and have added their ideal serving suggestions below.
Pure Pork: The tried and trusted traditional flavours, best served with pickled onions or as an accompaniment to a good old fashioned Ploughman's lunch
Pork & Pickle: A minor alteration to classic, best served with a wedge of good, mature cheddar and a peppery watercress salad.
Honey & Mustard: A classic with a kick, this one is best served with gherkins and pickled radishes.
Sweet Potato & Goats Cheese: A delicious alternative for our veggie friends this treat is best served with a fresh, leafy salad - the perfect summer lunch.
5) How to make a sausage roll
You can’t expect us to give away all our secrets, can you?
At Nelly’s Farm, we know what makes a good sausage roll, and our farm to fork approach using fresh, local ingredients means we don’t scrimp when it comes to quality and you shouldn’t either!
