Warm Up with Nelly’s Farm Favourites
by Joshua Reeves
Sussex is the home of bonfire, and there’s a certain magic to the fifth of November that is both unique and timeless.
The first breath of smoky air as you step outside, the crackle of wood catching flame, children bundled up in scarves and woolly hats with rosy cheeks glowing in the firelight.
It’s the night people brave the cold weather, and stop for a moment to look up at the sky together. Fireworks burst, neighbours chat over fences, and someone always brings a flask of something hot. It feels a little nostalgic, a little wild and wonderfully British.
For many of us, being Sussex-based, Bonfire Night is stitched together with memories of wellies in the mud, sparklers fizzing in mittened hands, plates piled high with something warm from the kitchen, and, if you're from Lewes, madmen in fancy dress carrying flaming torches through the street.
Maybe it’s the taste of hot soup ladled from a Thermos, or a flaky pastry shared from a paper napkin. There’s comfort in the ritual of it all, wrapping up, heading out and finding that perfect spot near the fire where your toes start to thaw and the display is in full view.
Of course, no Bonfire Night is complete without proper food to warm your hands and fill your belly. At Nelly’s Farm, we’re all about those simple, hearty eats that make a cold night feel cosy.
Our sausage rolls are a crowd favourite, especially the Pure Pork with its buttery pastry and hint of nutmeg and sage. Easy to hold, even with gloves on, they’re perfect for eating as the fireworks fizz above.
If you fancy something with a little kick, our Chilli and Garlic Scotch Egg will do the trick. Pair it with a splash of hot sauce or a mug of mulled cider for an instant bonfire glow. Vegetarians aren’t left out either – the Pea and Pesto Scotch Egg and Onion Bhaji Fritter bring bright, comforting flavours to the mix.
So wherever you’re celebrating this November, gather your friends, grab a few favourites and make it a night of warmth, sparkle and good food, oh, and don't forget your bonfire prayers... "Remember, Remember, The Fifth Of November..."
